itb - Institut für Technik der Betriebsführung (Management Technique Institute)

The Institut für Technik der Betriebsführung (itb), located in Karlsruhe, is one of 6 research centers together making up the Deutsches Handwerksinstitut (German Crafts Institute - DHI), located in Berlin. These research centers are entrusted with different missions all aimed at developing the productivity and competitiveness of craftsmen – whether through research works with a scientific basic but focusing on applications covering the problems faced by craftsmen, or through direct practical assistance aimed at promoting professionals.

The itb deals with the management of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s). As a management partner for craftsmen, its competences involve research and training.

With research works strongly focused on applications, the itb provides SME’s with scientific insights aimed at delivering advice for managers in companies and crafts organizations.

Within its scope of activities, a great number of institutional studies are carried out in the following areas:
 

• Development of management systems: financial management, quality management, management of safety, health care and conservation
• Establishment of management methods to plan, organize and control the workflow in small businesses
• Providing examples of business developments in different areas of crafts
• Growth analysis and forecast in different areas of crafts
• Training of management skills
• The management workshops offered address corporate and senior managers in SME’s as well as business advisors in the crafts organization
• Integrating new methods of learning and training
• Introducing innovative services aimed at enriching competences and increasing added value
• Conceptual studies treating workflow and organizational management
• Use of information and communication technologies and implementation of computer-based and Web-based systems in business processes
• Studies on e-business models to face the challenges of the global market
